Motorcycle Crash Making Headlines Again
Wednesday, March 10, 2010 at 3:47PM After over 500,000 hits on MySpace and 173,450 on YouTube, David's Disciple Now crash is still making headlines. Tuesday night (March 9) Comedy Central's, Tosh.0 aired Motorcycle Crash In Church in a piece they called, Wheelie Fall. The shows host, Daniel Tosh, gives David a hard time for his "Wheelie Fall." Although the 1:44 segment is funny, the perception of the church gained through the monologue is saddening.
The subtle innuendoes pertaining to the church and its culture leads one to believe there is some church history in the host's background. The monologue is about more than a motorcycle crash, it's an indication as to how the world views the church. It's statements like, "I'll pretend I'm fine with no sex before marriage...", "Out of the way Promise Keepers", and "There goes the bingo table and the pamphlets as to why abstinence is fun", that cause me to wonder what are we communicating to people about the church organization.
As church leaders, are we raising generations of church supporters or generations of church opposers? Watch the video and tell me what you think?

I saw this particular airing on Comedy Central and my impression of it did not lend itself to question what the Church is doing wrong to create such a perception. My instinct was more along the lines of a recognition of just how far and to what extent the enemy will go to humiliate the Church and it's efforts.
Though there is some truth in the less than perfect perceptions associated with the Church, we must remember that the Church is made up of people. And though people can have the best of intentions they can sometimes be weak or fall prey to worldly pressures and desires thereby making some poor decisions at times. The enemy will take advantage of our imperfections and will use every small detail as a weapon against the message of the Church. He does this out of fear of the Church because it is reaching the people and extending itself farther and farther. If the enemy was not threatened he would not feel it necessairy to try to discredit what is being done.
So my belief is that the Church is still the rock under our feet. It is built on solid ground and the impression that we will leave on the world will come through the Word of God. As it is stated in one of my Catholic Prayer books when addressing the Second Glorious Mystery, The Ascension - it states [Jesus had said, " Go out to the whole world: proclaim the Good News to all creation." (Mk 15:16) Each one of us is responsible for that part of creation where the Lord puts us and asks us to work. We give witness to all the people who come into our lives, and we sanctify the natural things we use by offering them to God."]
If we are standing on the principals of the Church, allowing God to use us and to flow through us the impression that we are leaving on the world of the Church is the one that God intends. Let our voices be the battle cry, let the truth of the world be our sword!
